Safeguarding Policy

1. Introduction

Serenity Haven is dedicated to creating a safe and supportive environment for all participants in our mentoring programmes. This safeguarding policy outlines our commitment to protecting mentees, mentors, and staff from harm, abuse, and exploitation.

2. Purpose

The purpose of this policy is to protect mentees, provide clear guidelines for mentors and staff on identifying and responding to safeguarding concerns, and promote a culture of safety and respect within our organisation.

3. Scope

This policy applies to all employees, mentors, mentees, volunteers, and anyone working on behalf of Serenity Haven.

4. Definitions

  • Safeguarding: Actions taken to promote the welfare of children and vulnerable adults and protect them from harm.

  • Mentee: An individual receiving guidance and support from a mentor.

  • Mentor: An individual providing guidance and support to a mentee.

  • Staff: All employees and volunteers of Serenity Haven.

5. Legal Framework

Our safeguarding policy is guided by relevant legislation and guidelines, including the Children Act 1989 and 2004, the Care Act 2014, the Equality Act 2010, and the Human Rights Act 1998.

6. Responsibilities

Management is responsible for ensuring that all staff and mentors are aware of this policy and receive appropriate training. A Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) will be appointed to oversee and implement safeguarding procedures. The DSL will lead on developing and reviewing safeguarding policies, act as a point of contact for concerns, and maintain confidential records. All staff and mentors must understand and comply with this policy, attend regular safeguarding training, and report any concerns to the DSL immediately.

7. Safeguarding Principles

Our safeguarding approach is based on six principles. Empowerment encourages mentees to understand their rights and protections. Prevention involves proactive measures to prevent harm. Proportionality ensures responses are appropriate to the risk level. Protection provides support for at-risk mentees. Partnership involves collaboration with local authorities and relevant organisations. Accountability ensures transparency and responsibility in safeguarding practices.

8. Safeguarding Procedures

Recruitment and training are essential; thorough background checks are conducted, and mandatory safeguarding training is required. Staff and mentors should recognise signs of abuse, including physical, emotional, sexual abuse, neglect, and exploitation. Any concerns must be reported to the DSL immediately. The DSL will assess the concern and decide on appropriate action, including referrals to external authorities if necessary. Detailed, confidential records of all concerns and actions taken will be maintained and stored securely.

9. Confidentiality

All safeguarding concerns and records will be handled confidentially, sharing information only with relevant individuals and agencies on a need-to-know basis.

10. Review of Policy

This policy will be reviewed annually, or more frequently if required, to ensure it remains current and effective.
